i feel like i’ve been waiting to see this smile for the whole second season.
not just for the brittana of it all, but just to see santana truly happy again. she had a boob job over summer because she felt unnoticed, which caused her to lose her position has head cheerio and any status she had at school. she lost her best friend to artie - twice, and her loneliness and insecurities started becoming more apparent. she reached out to puck, sam and finn for any chance of intimacy and, with hindsight, probably to mask what she was feeling about her sexuality, but none of them wanted her for her. she picked fights and threw insults around because of the anger and bitterness inside her, for attention, because she was jealous of other peoples’ happiness, for any semblance of a reputation she had left. the whole glee club, the people who are meant to love her unconditionally, lashed out and told her that she was a bitch who wouldn’t amount to more than a pole-dancer. she poured her heart out to brittany, the hardest thing she’s ever had to do, and ultimately got rejected. she had two false relationships to hide her sexuality because she was so afraid of what would happen to her, and because she hadn’t accepted it herself. she couldn’t even sing with her friends because she hadn’t come to terms with it, yet she was single-handedly responsible for allowing kurt to come back to mckinley, by helping karofsky, and protected him afterwards (all without a word of thanks, from anyone). she was admirably mature towards the girl she loves being with someone else, unlike most characters and her past self.
season two has shown an incredible amount of growth in santana. while her situations got worse and more upsetting and difficult for her, she got stronger and became a better person. she is almost unrecognisable in character from the girl at the beginning of the season. the difference is, that she’s becoming happier. she’s not all the way there, but she’s learning to embrace emotions that previously made her feel weak and to accept and value herself. it has not been easy and the amount she’s been through, how she has coped with that and her willingness to change shows how deserving she is of love and happiness. and i am so relieved for her that she finally got a moment of bliss. this smile is the culmination of everything she has faced being worth it.
